What is Reconstructionist Judaism?
Reconstructionist Judaism is a spin off of Conservative Judaism. It is the smallest of the four Jewish Movements, but it is growing quickly all over the world. Reconstructionism fits somewhere in between the Conservative Movement and the Reform Movement.
It stresses that Judaism is not simply about following the rules and adhering to the rituals of our faith. Rather, Judaism is about discovering the meaning of the rules and the rituals and therefore choosing to embrace them because they add meaning and spirituality to our lives. Reconstructionism brings Judaism to life. It makes our tradition relevant and meaningful and it teaches us how to reconnect with our roots, reinvigorate our faith, and rediscover our spirit.
At times, certain Jewish traditions and practices might be out of step with our modern lives. When this happens, Reconstructionism teaches us that we are obligated to reconstruct our faith, holding onto the past, but allowing it to adapt to modern times. In the early 1900s the first Reconstructionists did just this when they reconstructed tradition by creating the bat mitzvah, a ceremony which allowed young girls to receive the same honor as young boys who were becoming bar mitzvah. The bat mitzvah ceremony is just one way that the Reconstructionist Movement has influenced the larger Jewish community.
